Dr. Thomas received her undergraduate science education and medical education at the University of Toronto and received a fellowship in Radiation Oncology from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1977. Her post-graduate training was in Internal Medicine at the Toronto General Hospital and then in Radiation Oncology at Princess Margaret Hospital where she was a chief resident.
She was appointed to the staff of Princess Margaret Hospital in 1978 and to the University of Toronto. Since 1987, she has been cross-appointed to the department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, University of Toronto and became a full professor of Radiation Oncology and Obstetrics & Gynecology in 1995. In 1988, she moved to Toronto Sunnybrook Regional Cancer Centre and became the Head of the Division of Radiation Oncology and Head of the Department of Radiation Oncology in 1991. She is currently a staff radiation oncologist in the department at Sunnybrook Odette Cancer Centre.
Her academic interests have been focused in clinical trials and data analysis, first in testicular seminoma and since then in all of the gynecologic malignancies. In the early 1980s she initiated trials of concurrent chemotherapy and radiation in gynecologic malignancies. She has maintained a sustained research interest and activity in all aspects of gynecologic malignancies.
She is the author or co-author of more than a 110 peer-reviewed publications and 37 book chapters.
From 2002-2004 Dr. Thomas was the president of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS). She chaired the Scientific Program Committee for the meeting of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society in Santa Monica, October 2006. She has been actively involved in the Gynecologic Oncology Group since 1988; first as a committee member, then as chair of the Cervix, Vulva and Vagina Committee and for two years as co-chair of the Protocol Committee. She is currently the co-chair of the NCI Gynecologic Cancer Steering Committee. Dr. Thomas was the 2008 recipient of the International Gynecologic Cancer Society (IGCS) Award for Excellence for research, teaching, mentorship, promoting international collaboration, and for leadership contribution to the IGCS.
She continues to be active in clinical practice and research, enjoying teaching and international lecturing.
