Dr. Tarek Meguid

Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Chief Medical Officer and Country Director of Village Health Works in Kigutu, Burundi

Tarek Meguid is a Physician (Maastricht University, 1986), specialized in Obstetrics & Gynaecology (1995). He holds a Master of Philosophy in Maternal and Child Health (MPhil-MCH) from University of Cape Town (2001), a Bachelor of Law (LL.B. (Hons)) from Nottingham Trent University (2006), and a Master of Studies in International Human Rights Law (MSt-IHRL) from Oxford University (2010). 
 
He is currently working as Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Chief Medical Officer and Country Director of Village Health Works in Kigutu, Burundi. 
 
Until January 2018, Tarek Meguid was a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in Mnazi Mmoja Hospital and Associate Professor at the State University of Zanzibar (SUZA), School of Health & Medical Sciences (2013-2017). He is Secretary and co-founder of Kanga Maternity Trust (KMT), Zanzibar, Tanzania. 
 
Tarek Meguid was appointed member of the World Health Organization’s Independent Expert Review Group (2013-2015). Occasionally he serves as Consultant for the Human Rights Commission of the United Nations. He is a former Associate Professor and Head of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the School of Medicine, University of Namibia (2012-2013). Before that, he had served as Head of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at Bwaila Hospital and Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi (2004-2010). As co-founder of the Chitenje Maternity Trust in Malawi, he played a leading role in the planning and construction of two public maternity hospitals, based on human rights principles, where all women can deliver in their own private rooms.
 
He served first as Medical Officer and later as Obstetrician & Gynaecologist in Northern Namibia's Onandjokwe Hospital for altogether ten years before and after Namibia's Independence (1987–1990, 1995-2001) and was Visiting Professor at the School of Law and Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh, USA (2011). His writings have appeared in numerous peer-reviewed and non-peer-reviewed publications.
 
He is the father of ocumentary Filmmaker and Anthropologist Lara Meguid.
