Professor Simone Buitendijk MD, MPH, PhD is Vice-Provost (Education) at Imperial College London, leading its vision for an innovative and globally-leading learning & teaching environment, and an excellent student educational experience.

 

Professor Buitendijk is currently implementing a new Learning & Teaching Strategy – an evidence-based transformation of its pedagogy to make teaching more interactive, blending physical and digital, in order to create truly global students who will be effective agents for change.


Professor Buitendijk studied Medicine in Utrecht, received a Master’s degree in Public Health at the Yale School of Medicine in the US, and earned her PhD degree in Leiden. Vice-Rector Magnificus at Leiden University from 2011-2016, she held the Netherlands’ first professorial chair for Midwifery Studies at the Amsterdam Medical Center. She is Chair of the League of European Research Universities’ (LERU) steering group for teaching and learning, and co-authored the LERU position papers ‘'Women, research and universities: excellence without gender bias" (2013); “Online learning at research-intensive universities” (2014) and “Gendered research and innovation” (2015).
