Prof. Dr. Wilco C. Peul

Wilco C. Peul is a Professor of Neurosurgery at the Leiden University and chairs the department of neurosurgery in Leiden and the leader of the Neurosurgical Cooperation Holland in Leiden & The Hague. He serves as a member of Spine Committee (EANS) and as a Secretary UEMS MSJ Spine Surgery Competence Spine Specialist. Besides acting as a neurosurgeon he is a trained Epidemiologist and with regard to Spine Research he is a member of the Editorial Board of Cochrane Back Review Group.

He published the results of several spine studies in top rated medical journals and since 2013 broadened his clinical and scientific interest to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) where does cooperate with Andrew Maas within the Center-TBI management team and leads the Dutch Neurotraumatology Quality Registry(Net-QuRe) initiative, sponsored by the Dutch Brain Foundation. Hoping to use his epidemiological knowledge for a global better understanding of the TBI, he focuses his interest on the prognostication efforts in severe TBI from a multidisciplinary perspective, including non-medical professionals like philosophers.

His most recent spine research editorial paper published alongside 2 RCT’s in The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) in April 2016 might create a paradigm shift in spinal stenosis surgery in the elderly.

This interactive and interdisciplinary guest-lecture will focus on Global Challenges in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury.
